Abstract: The Art of Design

Abstract: The Art of Design is a Netflix documentary series profiling eight innovative artists, designers and thinkers in the world of art and design, and their lives as creators, to help demonstrate how their creative worlds are shaped.

Here we share with you our 3 favourite eps.

Episode 2: Tinker Hatfield - Footwear Design.

Undeniably the most influential man in the world of sneaker design, Hatfield is responsible for some of the most groundbreaking sneaker designs ever - Air Max, Air Jordan, Huarache to name a few, as well as the Marty McFly's self-lacing sneakers for the Back To The Future II movie! Hatfield revolutionised the way we see sneakers and sneaker culture. Some of the key take-ways for us were: to never put form before function; to be as different as you possibly can; to push boundaries; to start with abstract concepts and then tie them back into your design; and to look for inspiration everywhere.

It was however Hatfield's closing message that really resonated with us the most - to get out there and experience as much as you can - experience the world, and everything within it, to help provide the creative library you need to innovate and inspire your work.

Episode 3: Es Devlin - Stage Design.

One of the world's most recognised set and stage designers, Es Devlin is known for her work in music (think Beyonce and Kanye), fashion (think Louis Vuitton), as well as the 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony in London. An architect of temporary space, her work has graced some of the world's biggest and most prestigious stadiums and stages.

Es Devlin's episode was another favourite for us as we learned of the ways Devlin's innovative design, mixed with her traditional values, enables her to carry out such dazzling and imaginative projects. This resonated with us and the way SLC's own design and values fit into the Australian market.

Episode 8: Ilse Crawford - Interior Design.

British interior designer Ilse Crawford is widely acclaimed for her countless beautifully- designed spaces around the world. From Soho House properties, to Aesop stores, to Cathay Pacific lounges - Ms Crawford cleverly creates spaces that engage the senses and promote well-being.

We were extremely inspired by the way Ms Crawford's old- school mentality is coupled with a modern aesthetic.
